Why did you decide to create an app version of Rory's Story Cubes?
We decided to create an App version of Rory's Story Cubes® after seeing the accelerometer in the very first iPhone. Prior to the era of smart phones we didn't see the point of creating a digital version of Rory's Story Cubes®. The whole benefit of Rory's Story Cubes® is its tactile nature, and so an App version did not seem to reflect this. However, when we saw the accelerometer we realised that it would still be possible to shake, roll and touch the cubes and that the visual and kinaesthetic characteristics would not be lost. We also thought we could reach a wider audience via the App and get people around the world to tell stories before we had such widespread international distribution for the physical product. We also saw the potential for using the App in the classroom.
What advantages do you think the app offers over the physical dice?
There are various advantages that the App has over the physical cubes. The App is the ultimate portable device. You can carry it with you at all times. If you have a Smart Phone, the App is also cheaper than the physical set. It is also easier for players to access the newer sets such as RSC MIX, if they are not yet available as physical cubes in their country.
How can the app be effectively utilised in the classroom?
It's important to emphasise that we're not experts in education and that our remit is in imagination. However, we have heard about the App being used effectively in the classroom with smart boards, and also the possibilities offered by hooking iPads up to projectors.
Are any additional features planned for the app?
We have recently done a big update to the App which includes improved graphics and the ability to buy extra sets as in App purchases. We don't have any major new features planned for the immediate future. We are always interested to hear what people would like to hear in terms of developing the App features , but would always aim to keep it simple to use.
Do you have any other apps in the pipeline?
We recently launched a new game The Extraordinaires Design Studio, a design, creative thinking and problem solving game. One of the features of this is an Uploader App, which allows players to upload and share their designs and save them in their own online account. We always have plenty of ideas for new Apps, but this would be the most recent one. http://www.extraordinaires.com/
