CONCEPT: Solve puzzles, learn to count to 10 and more with this highly engaging new offering from Appy Kids.
DELIVERY: High quality delivery is something that Growl Media seem to specialise in. Their Zee's Alif Ba app is one of the finest Arabic apps we've yet seen and this latest offering is just as impressive. With a swamped preschool and early years market, standing out can be a challenge but kids will eat this up thanks to its wonderful graphics and an outstanding overall design.
The main part of the app involves following the cute characters Alfie and his elephant Haathi as they meet a vibrant selection of marine creatures. Selecting one of these creatures enters a puzzle area where the pieces need to be joined to compose the whole animal. This is supported by gentle prompts and uses the touch screen very effectively.
Upon completion the name of the creature is sounded out in both Hindi and English (or Arabic) and the the creature can be moved around, complete with great animations. before a counting mini game ensues. Having counted the points on the screen, which are different for each animal, the child is rewarded with a fish. Now that may seem odd but Appy Oceans has a unique trophy system. Rather than collecting badges or stickers, for a virtual board, users are presented with their own reef to collect their trophy fish in.
The reef itself is its own activity. Children have to feed and play with their fish to keep them happy as well as periodically cleaning the reef to keep the fish healthy. If they don't, the fish will start to disappear. This is such a nice touch as it reinforces environmental concerns in a way that even the very young can appreciate.
Still want more? Appy Oceans even has a music creation area wherein the underwater band can produce a lively Bollywood style tune. Clicking on each creature brings them to life and they start to play their instrument to the beat. It's just for fun and yet brings another dimension to the proceedings.
LIMITATIONS: It would have been great to have seen some factual information about the creatures featured in the activities, either in audio format or fact files.
CONCLUSION: Another stellar release from Appy Kids who are quickly making a real name for themselves through their dedication to quality. 5/5
