DIY SUN SCIENCE
CONCEPT: A polished, interactive app based on The Sun, complete with guides to a range of practical experiments.
DELIVERY: Quality is the word here and it's in abundance. Developed in collaboration with NASA, this ebook style guide to all things solar is diverse, well presented and bursting with information in multimedia formats. The app is split into three main sections. The first provides step by step instructions for a wide range of practical experiments relating to The Sun. Most use only everyday objects and each is broken down well to ensure accuracy and safety. We have commented before regarding science apps as to why students would use a virtual version over carrying out the real investigation so it's refreshing to see this approach taken. The fact that the app bolsters these experiments with the wealth of information in the other sections is further testament to its high quality delivery!
The second area provides a library of images and videos relaying to the topic which allow users to watch some amazing footage of The Sun and related phenomena. A lot of these are time lapsed to allow the observation of effects that would take significant time periods to see occur in real life (and naturally require some pretty full on kit - thanks again NASA!)
The final section is something special. Users can observe live images of The Sun courtesy of NASA! This itself is awesome but is taken even further through the inclusion of a split screen filter control that allows you to investigate the solar effects that can only be viewed when viewing varying wavelengths of light. The interactivity here is inspired and the section is supported by a learning area and even a little puzzle to test comprehension!
LIMITATIONS: Perhaps video guides to the experiments?
CONCLUSION: Hugely impressive in scope and delivery, a real gem. 5/5
