CONCEPT: Do Ink is the fun, easy and creative way to create animations on your iPad.
DELIVERY: The iPad was all about simplicity and so I love it when there is a complex concept out there I would love to be able to master but haven’t been able to do so yet that shows up as an app! I love watching all of the wonderful animation videos that come out; you know the ones that Sir Ken Robinson made famous. Thanks to Do Ink I can try my hand at a few of my own!
What’s great about this app is that it’s great if you are a beginner but has just as much to offer to advanced users as well. Apps that unleash the creative side of us are my favorite to bring into the classroom and here is why Do Ink is making its way into mine.
Do Ink has easy to use but very powerful vector drawing tools, you can do simple frame by frame animation and work your way up to key frame animations as you advance in the techniques. If you are worried about not knowing where to start Do Ink has you covered by allowing access to a library of community art that you can begin working on to create your own masterpiece or you can import images in from your camera roll. If you need a little guidance on how to get started Do Ink has put together some wonderful tutorials that will give even those who can’t go beyond stick figures the confidence to bring out their artistic side.
Once you open the app you immediately feel at ease and if you hit the question mark icon you’ll get a great overview of all tools available. The smooth user interface makes features like creating motion paths and the powerful composition editor easy and fun to use. If you want to take your Do Ink videos to the next level remember they can be saved in the camera roll so you can import them into apps like iMovie to add sound, titles and other clips, taking your animations to a whole new level.
Furthermore, Do Ink animations can be shared and viewed across multiple platforms with a simpler version for the iPhone and iPod as well. With Do Ink you don’t have to draw to be an artist you can animate!
LIMITATIONS: It’s definitely not a replacement for Adobe Flash but it is a great place to start. We wish you could go back and re-edit Do Ink animations; however once it’s been saved there’s no turning back.
CONCLUSION: Overall, this powerful animation tool will give you a whole new appreciation for Pixar and give kids a little inside peek at to how animations are created allowing them to explore a whole new level of creativity. 5/5
