HOME DESIGN 2D
CONCEPT: Design a digital home interior using a library of elements.
DELIVERY: This was one of those apps that I just stumbled upon and didn't expect much from. I was actually quite pleasantly surprised as, in the right hands, it could be a great little learning tool. Essentially you get to design the interior of a house, presented in a 2D cross-section. The initial setup provides you with a four room layout but you can also access a free background pack download that allows for more layout variations.
Design elements are presented via four galleries of objects that cover bathrooms, bedrooms, kitchens and general items like doors and windows. You just grab what you want to include and resize it appropriately before positioning within one of the four rooms. There's a great range of objects, providing a multitude of variations for kids to play around with.
Completed designs can be saved to the camera roll and additional options include the ability to insert your own images as the backdrop. You can also turn off the somewhat annoying music track that loops throughout. The camera roll export means that images can then be brought into other apps... Could I recommend Tellagami here. :)
LIMITATIONS: Some of the design elements are very small and can be tricky to manipulate on the touch screen. Younger students may also get lost in the wealth of options availed to them. Finally, although you can insert an image of your own as a background, it takes up the whole screen and can't be adjusted to just fill one of the rooms.
CONCLUSION: A fun, creative app that allows for a great deal of student choice during the design process. 3/5
