CONCEPT: Inspiration Maps is designed for concept/idea mapping, brainstorming, organizing ideas and creating outlines. The app is particularly interesting and useful for visual learners.
DELIVERY: A student introduced Inspiration Maps as his favourite brainstorming app during a pre-writing session. I found it interesting as it allows you to do a lot more than just brainstorming. You can create idea sketches, analyze information, write outlines for essays, organize ideas for a project and even represent your ideas using images.
The app provides a rich collection of templates ranging from outline maps and diagrams for writing essays to extensive lab reports. You also have the option of creating a diagram or outline from scratch.
The user-friendly interface of this app makes brainstorming very simple. Just double tap anywhere to create an idea bubble. You can change the shape to a thought bubble or a callout and choose a different fill colour. The idea bubbles are connected with arrows. You can change the style and direction of the arrows to present your ideas clearly.
If you are creating an outline for writing a procedure, for example a lab experiment, you have the option of using numbered thought bubbles to emphasis the order of the steps in the procedure.
Visual learner can change the idea bubbles to images. The lite version has a good collection of free images to choose from. You also have the option of enhancing your idea sketch by adding notes, images, audio and hyperlinks. You can get images directly from the Internet or use the images on your device.
The best part of this app is that it allows you to view your ideas in two different modes, diagram and outline. The diagram mode, as the name suggests, shows your ideas in the form of idea bubbles and images whereas the outline mode gives you the same information in the form of a text outline. You can toggle between the two modes with just a tap on the outline/diagram icons. This feature makes it an awesome tool for planning all kinds of writing tasks.
Finally, you can send the diagram/outline to your camera roll, open it in other apps like Noteshelf, Knowmia and Dropbox or just airdrop.
LIMITATIONS: Can’t think of any limitations as such, just that it does not allow collaboration!
