CONCEPT: Create stunning geometric patterns using a range of templates then delve deeper into the mathematics behind them and their cultural significance.
DELIVERY: Some apps spring up overnight and as a result, their delivery can be somewhat half-baked. iOrnament is the latest incarnation of a series of software developed over the last 25 years by Professor Jurgen Richter-Gerbert out of Munich. As such this is an app that is polished, professional and has depths beyond many other artistic offerings of its kind.
The main activity allows you to create amazing geometric patterns, or ornaments as they should be known, using an intuitive and responsive touch screen interface. Colours can be tweaked, as can line thicknesses and blur - all to be expected. What takes this further is the ability to select from a wide range of template groupings. These become increasingly complex in the way that they reflect and tessalate your design. An excellent touch is that you can actually alter this after creating your design, allowing you to see variations of it instantly. You can even select a rosette formation to create a circular effect. It is so quick and easy and the results so eye-pleasing.
This is an app that could be used with a class of teenagers as much as it could with a class of infants. The built in tips section is another big plus! Designs can be shared to the camera roll, via email or even uploaded to a shared world gallery - yet another feature that scores bonus points for this great app.
Other apps would stop there. That's enough isn't it? This is something special though and upon clicking the home icon, two other excellent additions to the package become available. First up is the maths area which consists of a series of excellent interactive presentations that guide you through the mathematical concepts that underpin these designs. These mini-lessons are engaging and clearly explained. Secondly you get a sample gallery of real-world ornamental designs from across the globe, along with detailas of the geometric transformations applied to create them.
LIMITATIONS: Hard to think of any, which is always a good sign! There are more options available for a purchase of the Pro upgrade though.
CONCLUSION: An innovative and gratifying digital experience with a wealth of factual information to support understanding. 5/5
