KING OF MATH
CONCEPT: A fast-paced multiple choice quiz game covering a wide range of maths concepts from the basic operations to fractions and geometry.
DELIVERY: it's quite tough to talk about the delivery here without splitting it down into the content and the presentation. So I'm going to do just that.
Presentation wise that app is nothing spectacular. It's wrapped in a kind of pseudo-Middle Ages ranking system that doesn't really extend beyond the sketch of your character evolving as you rank up and the slightly annoying Middle Ages music.
The content though is very good. Set out as a series of books with various chapters to complete in each, the app is essentially a multiple choice game. Where it elevates itself above similar fare is in the way each mathematical subject is developed from chapter to chapter so for example the subtraction questions begin as straight forward " what is the answer" types and gets harder before becoming missing number problems with the answer provided.
This is great as it helps highlight weaknesses in mathematical comprehension that other games like this might miss out on. It also allows for deeper understanding within a concept. The range of content is nice too - going beyond the four operations ( and some mixed bag levels) to include geometry, fractions, powers and other mental math areas.
It's fast paced and challenging, with the requisite achievement system in place to set targets and goals for learners.
LIMITATIONS: There is no actual teaching here. Students either know the answers or they don't.
CONCLUSION: A fairly fun and broad game for developing speed and accuracy of mental maths. 3/5
