CONCEPT: A unique app that uses the touch screen to identify numbers as young learners count with their fingers.
DELIVERY: I love it when I come across an app that makes full use of the power of the iPad and Little Digits certainly does that. The multi-touch interface of the screen is used to allow young students to develop counting skills in a truly brilliant way. In fact every teacher I've shown this too this week has been amazed by it!
Basically, when you touch the screen with any amount of fingers, the app recognises the total and the number is both displayed on screen and sounded out. If you then add or remove digits, the number changes with you. This is great as kids can actually count to and from ten, adding and removing fingers for a really kinaesthetic learning experience.
There are also add and subtract activities where the learner can calculate the answer and then place the required digits onto the screen. I've tried this with my own four year old and watched with a big smile on my face as she sat counting the required fingers out on each hand to make the two parts of an addition sum!
You can even record your own voice in for each number which means that the app opens up to the MFL classroom too.
LIMITATIONS: I found that the app can crash when you try and delete all of the saved audio you've recorded, though this may be a bug related to the transition to iOS 8.
CONCLUSION: A unique concept that can be used as a fantastic learning tool in the early years classroom. 5/5
