CONCEPT: The creators of Puppet Workshop bring you a recycling themed version of their character creation tool.
DELIVERY: As with Puppet Workshop, this app allows young learners to design digital characters by drag and dropping features and decorations onto a body part. The main difference here is the theme of recycling. What this means is that the body parts that you can choose from are images of used bottles, cans and the like whilst a lot of the features can be designed using bits and bobs you would find in the kitchen or around the house. Naturally this is great as kids can go and make these things for real - turning the app into a DT project planner of sorts.
The actual interface is easy to use for young learners and there are a wide selection of decorations grouped under categories like mouths, eyes etc. You can also select a pen tool to draw extra detail onto your creation. Backgrounds can be changed and the ability to insert a background image from the camera roll is available. Upon completion, the character is saved to a gallery and can also be exported.
LIMITATIONS: More information about why we recycle would have contextualised the activity for kids in a clearer way. The ability to animate or give voice to your creation would also have been a great addition (you can do a great combo of this app with Chatterpix though.)
CONCLUSION: A nice little character creation app with a worthy underlying message. It's a lot of fun. 4/5
