STAR WALK KIDS
CONCEPT: The original augmented reality star gazing app gets a more child-friendly redesign.
DELIVERY: Starwalk has long been a staple app in education. I've seen it presented at numerous conferences and we even featured it in our second volume of Redefining the Task ebooks. It's a great showcase of the power of mobile technology and a stellar app (excuse the pun.)
So I was a little surprised when the makers contacted me and told me they wee releasing a new version that was tailored for kids. Was there a need? Could it really do anything that well but differently? Thankfully the answer is a resounding yes. What Starwalk Kids offers is a clever variation on the core app that streamlines the interface and adds some excellent animations on key planets and stars that will engage and enthralled in equal measures.
As with the original, the primary concept of augmented reality stargazing is delivered using the the built-in gyroscope to mirror the map on your screen to the stars in your field of vision (whether or not it is day or night.) What's changed is the more child friendly graphics and cartoon-style interface which are now accompanied by clear, simple narration. The effect is stunning and will hook learners instantly as they try to locate the North Star, the Sun and more celestial bodies across the ocean of space.
As mentioned above, key details (planets, major stars etc) are accompanied by multimedia content such as short animated films or audio facts. These really bring the subject matter to life in a bright, engaging way that elevate the app further still.
LIMITATIONS: As with the original app, there is no ability to snap images/export meaning screengrabbing is needed.
CONCLUSION: One of the very best apps for redefining learning is made even more accessible and informative for younger students. Simply superb. 5/5
