STRIDE AND PREJUDICE
CONCEPT: An endless runner style game where the text from Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice forms the platforms.
DELIVERY: We do love how the iPad inspires fresh approaches to a task and this app really is a great example of this. A simple endless runner game where Lizzy Bennet from the classic Jane Austen novel runs and jumps from platform to platform. The gimmick is that the platforms are composed of the entire text from Pride and Prejudice! The text is split up into platforms of differing size, not only to make the game somewhat more challenging but to accentuate the punctuation and pacing of the tale.
Two modes are available - a survival mode where you try to get as far through the story as possible without falling off and the gentler approach of the continuous reader mode where the story can be picked up from the point you last reached. Options available include the ability to slow down the pace of the text scroll and remove the acceleration that kicks in with successive jumps.
LIMITATIONS: Unless you seriously slow the text scroll speed, the pace can get incredibly frantic. This can be detrimental as the word platforms become a blur and secondary to the focus on not missing the timing to jump.
CONCLUSION: Ok so the whole app revolves around a simple gimmick but you have to love the creative approach taken to a well-worn text. 3/5
