CONCEPT: Introduce young learners to the world of music making through this colourful, charming band of characters.
DELIVERY: I'm going to dedicate this review to my one year old Elena who is absolutely entranced by this app at the moment!
As with all the app from Toca Boca, the delivery here is outstanding. The animation is great and the subtle touches (which you can learn more about via the parents section) make it stand out from anything similar on offer in the App Store.
So the premise is simple- you have a stage with seven slots on it. At the bottom of the screen is a selection of sixteen characters who each make a unique sound. These range from operatic singing to drums to guitars and more. Dragging one onto a slot on the stage activates their part in the song and depending on the level of the stage, the rhythm they play varies in pace. As each new character is added, they naturally mix into the overall sound, using C major as the key so that they always gel nicely.
A huge variety of combinations are available and the potential for experimentation is the real joy in this app. Despite the fact that they play just knew song, it can sound vastly different depending on the musicians that you include.
There's also a star slot at the top and when a character is added to this they shoot onto a solo stage screen, with the tune still playing, where each can be interacted with in its own way. This allows the user to improvise over the top of the melody and add their own touch to the tune! An excellent addition to the overall experience.
LIMITATIONS: The ability to record your mixes would have been great.
CONCLUSION: With bucket loads of charm and a natural, easy interface, this is a super app for youngsters to dabble with music making. 4/5
