CONCEPT: A crossword game where you use any word to fill the blanks.
DELIVERY:You know those ideas that just make sense? Those simple little concepts that make you think - why didn't I think of that? This is one of those.
A simple concept delivered brilliantly, Anyword Xword is the latest offering from Alan Peat Ltd who are steadily becoming one of the go-to brands for English apps. The game presents a series of blank crossword puzzle style grids. With a timer running, you must endeavour to fill the spaces using literally any words you can fit in the spaces. Naturally this becomes more challenging as the word lengths extend and crossover more. It becomes essential that you go back and adjust your choices to ensure that they all fit as needed.
Points are awarded both for pace of completion and the use of more uncommon letters like q or z. In fact, like Scrabble, letter values are assigned to challenge students to strive for more unorthodox combinations. As such this makes for a hugely fun and engaging tool for vocabulary expansion and spelling practice. Integration with the iOS Game Centre provides achievements and score tables to add to the motivation.
Various versions in other languages are planned for release over the next few weeks too. This will open up the concept to MFL teachers as well.
It'd be great to have some control over the words. I know the point is that it's ANY word but if you could assign bonus points for using word lists that are being covered in class to encourage their use (or science vocab for example) that would be a great touch.
CONCLUSION: A fun and addictive game with the potential to inspire learning and language development. Definitely worth a download.
