SPOTLIGHT: TalkFactory - moderate class discussions

    August 3, 2015

I've used a range of apps from The Open University in the classroom and even reveiwed a couple back in the day here on iPad Educators  (Pop Art Me and Devolve Me) Today I popped on the App Store to check to see if they had anything new on offer and was pleasantly surprised by another free little app they've put out called TalkFactory.

It provides six criteria which can be used to moderate and direct group discussion. Three are positive and three are negative which adds a little gamification element to proceedings as students try to gain more positive points and avoid negative ones.  Another welcome addition is the ability to customise the six criteria to personalise the experience further.

The results display in real time in the form of a bar chart which can be titled and saved for future reference. There is no export option (which is odd) but the graph can easily be screengrabbed if you wanted to use it elsewhere or print it.

It could definitely be used effectively with small groups or even with a whole class.
