At our school we've been used the Nessy platform for some years to support students with dyslexia. We've also been fans of their excellent Hairy Letters/Phonics/Words apps in the Early Years classrooms. They've always produced high quality, child friendly software and this new app offering, Chimp Fu, is no different in that respect. The presentation is slick and engaging with a Kung Fu Panda (well, monkey) style vibe. Kids will quickly become engaged in the activity - as my own kids can testify to!
The focus is on reading and specifically helping youngsters decompose polysyllabic words into chunks to make them easier to digest. The app takes a game based learning approach with the player tasked with a series of training exercises, using the touch screen interface to physically split the words into pieces.
Each level introduces a new concept and the learning curve is suitable brisk yet fair, progressing from CVC-CVC words through to more advanced compounds. After each level is completed, the player is also rewarded with a short interactive mini game which serves as a fun brain break before the new concept is introduced.
With nine levels to work through, he game has good scope and though a multiplayer mode would have been a welcome addition, it's definitely worth a look if you are working with emergent readers or SEN students needing support with their decoding.
