Though I've always been more of a fan of rock music, I do have an ear for electronic music from time to time. Though I do not use music making apps with my students, I do share apps and other resources with our music staff.
Though I have around 30 apps downloaded that are sitting on my "need to look at these" page on my iPad, I keep getting pulled back to Launchpad this week. So much so, that I thought a spotlight piece on this electronic music creation tool was warranted. I've been trying to put my finger on just what it is that keeps pulling me back towards it and I think at the root, it's the simple fact that it is so easy to use and the output can sound very professional. You do get that "bedroom DJ" sensation.
Launchpad from Novation offers users a simple 8 track loop station and a range of loops encompassing various musical styles including Drum and Bass, House and Dubstep. Of course tweaking the tempo o a track, expands this range further (halve the Drum and Bass tempo and we're in Ninja Tunes territory) and a huge range of expansion packs are also on offer if the content availed within the core app isn't enough for you.
Samples can be brought in and out of the mix with a click and the app ensures that the tempo is maintained for fluidity. Levels and filters can also be applied to each track to perfect your digital soundscape. Also a lot of fun to play around with are the track FX which include stutters, gaters, delays and stoppers to add more flair and incidental touches. Try playing around with a stutter and you will quickly be able to add a sweet little break to the rhythm like a live DJ. Out can even add or drop out tracks during these moments to build to a new part of your track or segue into a new one altogether.
Tracks can be recorded and exported in either WAV or ARC format. Sadly no MP3 option is available but there are tones of online file converters that can easily remedy this if MP3 if the format you require. All the pads and FX can be customized for a more personal touch and for the more experienced, a midi sync option can be accessed via in app purchase.
I am by no means an expert in Music creation apps but I recognize quality when I see it and Launchpad is the real deal. Whether you are wanting to create something more electronic for use in a multimedia production, teaching students about beats, rhythm or electronic music in general, this is one app that will definitely serve your purpose well.
Who knows, you could even end up as the DJ at your next staff do...
